Probably the island of Hawaii's most spectacular claim to fame is its live volcano. World-famous Ki`lauea has been erupting continuosly since 1982, providing an unbeatable nature-show for visitors and residents. But the island has more to offer than a volcano. There's the cool cowboy country of Waimea, whose expansive ranchlands boasted cowpunchers even before the American West got its first wranglers.
There's the endless lava desert of Ka'u; the colorful orchid and anthurium farms of Hilo; the thriving art community of Volcano. You'll find the best sport fishing in the world in the waters of Kona. On the Kona and Kohala coasts, there's an incredible concentration of gorgeous golf courses and a glittering strand of resorts that rival the best on earth. These resorts are also the home of many of the island's best fine-dining places featuring award-winning cuisine.
Hawaii's Big Island has history, too. The Capt. Cook monument in Kealakekua Bay, the birthplace of Kamehmeha in North Kohala, museums, petroglyphs, heiau (temples), even a restored ancient fishing village help to present a vivid picture of life in Old Hawaii
Scenery? The kind that takes your breath away. With sights like Waipi'o valley and Polou` valley in Lohala, Akaka Falls on the Hamakua Coast, Rainbow falls and Onomea Bay near Hilo, the Chain of Craters in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you'll be wise to carry lots of film with you.
Yes, come see the volcano. Then enjoy the rest of the exciting attractions on Hawaii 's Big Island.

Drive-In Volcano
We think of volcanic eruptions as being quick and dirty. But lava has been flowing nonstop from Kilauea Volcano on The Big Island for 18 years. To see this long-running magna show, head for a new viewing site that's just a short drive off Highway 130 and a 20-minute walk across old lava fields. On the right day, you'll witness the glowing red lava as it pours into the sea with a steamy snap! crackle! and pop! For daily volcano updates, call Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at 808-985-6000
